Point Scholar 2006 – 2008
Tyler was raised in a conservative rural town in Alabama. He graduated from high school as President and valedictorian of his class and a recipient of the highly competitive Coca-Cola Scholarship. Upon coming out, Tyler endured rejection from family and friends. But, through the support of Point Foundation and his mentor Herb Hamsher, he has rebuilt many of these relationships.
Tyler was selected as a Point Scholar in 2006, while an undergrad at Samford University, where he was pursuing a dual degree in music and chemistry. With the help of Point, Tyler transferred to Rice University and graduated with a BA (with honors) in 2008. At Rice, he served as Vice President of his college and interned with the UN World Food Programme. Following graduation, Tyler pursued his master’s degree in human rights law (with honors) at Queen's University Belfast through the Mitchell Scholarship, one of the nation's most highly coveted international fellowships. After his LLM, he completed an intensive two-year accelerated law degree at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with honors.
Tyler is currently a Trainee Solicitor in London with Clyde & Co LLP, one of the largest law firms in the world. To date, his legal career has focused on Employment and Corporate Insurance. In his spare time, Tyler enjoys abseiling and skydiving and recently placed in the top 20% of participants at an international half marathon. An accomplished musician, he has won several US state and national piano and vocal competitions. He also sings in the Cathedral Chorus at London's St Paul's Cathedral.
