SCHOLARSHIPS
Merle Aronson, 1926 - 2004 She was the most giving woman I have ever known. Merle goes to bat for her friends and family and stands up for them until the very end. She taught me what family was really all about. Nathan Aronson, Grandson She lived and she loved. Merle always did it her way, and it will forever be the best. Adam Aronson, Grandson |
The Merle Aronson Point ScholarshipMerle Aronson was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1926. She spent most of her life as a homemaker and while she did not attend college herself, she supported equal access to higher education and believed that, when properly nutured, young people reveal their own unique talent. She was involved in civil rights and was a life member and past local chapter President of Hadassah, The Women's Zionist Organization and she was a supporter of The World Jewish Congress. Merle also supported Jewish Children's charities, the arts and was one of the earliest volunteers involved in addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis. The Merle Aronson Scholarship Fund was created by her family and friends to support one outstanding Point scholar annually. Jan Aronson, DaughterMom was proud of us for our accomplishments and accepting of our failures. Through her I learned compassion, dignity, generosity, charity, honesty, and strength. More importantly it was her acceptance black/white, gay/straight, male/ female that taught me not only family values but to value the family of humanity. Merle would have been outraged that a parent could abandon a child for something as natural as being gay. Her generosity would have responded to the idea of the Point Scholar. This is the perfect Memorial to my mother. Certainly as a gay father this scholarship is important to me. In Merle's name we can provide opportunity, support & hope. Isn't being an exceptional student enough? These exceptional kids will be tomorrow's leaders. Russ Aronson, Son |
