Nursing
Corey grew up in Arlington, VA and came out as transgender eight years ago while attending Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. At Antioch, he formed a transgender support group that addressed both the political and emotional experiences of his fellow transgender and gender queer classmates. In 2001, he received a Bachelors of Arts in Communications with a focus in photography. He continued his commitment to the transgender community through his work as both an activist and direct service provider with the LGBT and disability community in San Francisco, CA. Over the last two years, Corey has worked closely with Lyon-Martin Health Services, serving the low-income LGBT community as both a volunteer medical assistant and co-facilitator of the clinic’s volunteer training program. Repeated personal encounters with transphobia and homophobia in medical settings eventually compelled Corey to pursue a career in the field of nursing.
Corey is currently enrolled in the Master’s Entry Program in Nursing and plans to specialize in Adult Nurse Practitioner with a focus on mental health at the University of California, San Francisco. After graduation, Corey plans to continue his life-long work with the transgender community as a medical practitioner to the transgender population in a community-based clinic setting. |
