Tina Owen
Alverno CollegeAdministrative LeadershipTina Owen was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky and lived a military life. When she was thirteen, her father was sent to prison. Tina struggled through high school, having her daughter at a young age and barely graduating from high school. Four years later, she decided to go to college. She was accepted at Marquette University, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude, with a BA in English and Secondary Education. In 1998, she started her teaching career at an inner city high school in Milwaukee. It was there that Tina came out and started working for the LGBT community. She started a Gay/ Straight Alliance at her school and became an advocate for youth in her community. As a teacher, Tina saw that many gay and lesbian youth were facing harassment at school. Inspired by the Harvey Milk High School in New York, she started The Alliance School, a school dedicated to serving the needs of LGBT youth and others who experience harassment. She is currently working towards a degree in Administrative Leadership at Alverno College. She hopes to help others start schools like The Alliance School, while writing, continuing her studies, and becoming a recognized author and superintendent of schools. |
