2007 POINT SCHOLARS |
Jeff Manassero
University of California BerkeleyHistory and Political ScienceBorn, raised and educated in Northern California, Jeff came out to his family and friends during his junior year of high school. Although forced out of the closet at the age of 17, he was openly supported and accepted by those around him. Jeff became very involved with issues of tolerance and problems with prejudice, learning that every person comes to the table with their own stories, perspectives and expectations. Since high school, Jeff has attended UC Berkeley and been involved in the LGBT community on campus by representing queer interests in student government, by planning programs to foster positive relationships and by promoting LGBT issue awareness. Though not a self-described activist, Jeff still plans to integrate his experience as a gay man into his studies and future career. In order to work toward a culture of acceptance and compassion, he believes education offers the most tangible potential for change. Jeff plans to pursue a higher degree in education policy and hopes to work in state and national politics to advocate for equitable outcomes in our nation’s schools. As a product of a supportive family, Jeff recognizes his unique experience as progress toward the open and accepting community we all envision. |
