Lauren Beach
Michigan State UniversityMolecular Biology / Social RelationsLauren Beach is an undergraduate student at Michigan State University, graduating in May 2007 with degrees in both Social Relations and Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. Lauren originally entered MSU with the intention of only studying social science, but soon decided to pursue an interdisciplinary education so that she could better argue against policy makers who defended prejudiced public programs too often based at least partially on “hard science” biological justifications. After immersing herself as a microbiology major, Lauren also realized the importance of scientists who are aware of the social and political implications of their research, and she hopes someday to work as a science-educated attorney involved in crafting socially conscious public policy decisions surrounding global pharmaceutical approval standards. Lauren’s involvement in student leadership at MSU duly reflects her passion for interdisciplinary social justice and diversity education, and has been locally and nationally recognized. After coming out as bisexual her sophomore year of college, much of her activist and advocacy work on campus has involved interfacing with the progressive community and student government to help build active diverse coalitions that have successfully resulted in making MSU a more inclusive institution for all LBGTA people. Recognizing the important of all identities, Lauren has also worked hard to try to ensure that the “B” and “T” identities of the LBGTA community, as well as LBGTA people of color, are included in leadership roles and forums on campus, all while working three jobs to fund her own education. In Lauren's own words: “Recognizing and encouraging diversity builds strength and community in academic, social, and employment settings in irreplaceable ways. Understanding and respecting diversity is truly essential when setting good public policy.” |
