Claudia Caine

Claudia Caine is the hospital director and chief operating officer of Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Lutheran is a 450 bed community, teaching hospital - one of New York State's largest Level 1 Trauma Centers, a designated stroke center and one of the state's preeminent safety net hospitals serving the culturally diverse and indigent patients of Brooklyn. The hospital employs 3,200 staff members and sees 68,000 emergency room patients each year and has a budget of $350 million.

As director of the medical center, she is responsible for all hospital operations including nursing, all clinical services, new program development, strategic planning, budgeting and a wide range of support services. She coordinates all aspects of physician recruitment, retention and compensation.

Ms. Caine has a stellar reputation for leadership expertise, inspiring and motivating staff by example and leading others to grow new programs, improving processes to benefit patients and recruiting and retaining true clinical talent. Ms. Caine has been instrumental in redefining what a community hospital is in the 21st century by bringing some of New York's best physicians and specialty services to Lutheran Medical Center.

She has a love for bringing new clinical programs to the community that was previously unavailable. Obesity surgery, cardiac catheter care, stroke center designation, and an electronic medical record are just some of the many programs she has successfully introduced at Lutheran. She oversaw the complete redesign of the emergency department, both physically and from a process improvement perspective (reducing the wait time to see a doctor to 30 minutes) and expanded the size of the medical staff by 125% in less than five years.

Prior to coming to Lutheran, Ms. Caine was senior vice president of operations and vice president of ambulatory care at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in Manhattan. At St Luke's, Ms. Caine was a key member of a senior management team that oversaw a two-site, 700-bed facility, that included 140 clinics, two emergency rooms and multiple off-site clinical practices.

She spent most of her early career, 16 years, at The Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan where she held positions of increasing responsibility from department administrator to the assistant dean of academic affiliations for Mount Sinai's School of Medicine.

Ms. Caine received her bachelor's degree in economics from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and a master's degree in public administration from New York University. She currently serves on several key committees at the Greater New York Hospital Association, and is an active member of various professional organizations including the Cardiac Advisory Board, Medical Group Management Association and Women in Health Management.

In her spare time she is a student mentor for NYU's Wagner health policy and management program and a formal mentor in the Point. In 2008, the Nursing Department at Lutheran Medical Center honored Ms. Caine with The Friend of Nursing Award for her dedication and ongoing commitment to quality patient care and nurse development. She was presented the Through the Glass Ceiling Award by Women in Health Management for outstanding achievement as a leader and role model.
