Timothy Pyles

Scholar Class – 2011

Timothy Pyles was born in Silver Spring, Maryland and moved to Houston, Texas in middle school. Over the span of the first twelve years of his life he went through two divorces, both of which he was subjected to verbal harassment.  After moving to Houston, Texas and settling down with his father, in 2007, he came out a year later.

After coming out and receiving support from his family and most of his peers, he pursued to re-establish a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) at his school, which had been prohibited for the past ten years. During the course of running the GSA he began to be marginalized by teachers who thought him to be an abomination to “God” and who as well encouraged him to go to church so he could re-connect to the "right" path.

Not sure where to turn to for advice he sought refuge in friends and academics, which he excelled in. Through academics he discovered his passion for biology and anatomy, which led him towards the path of Biomedical engineering. Through his study and research Timothy plans to further treatment into diseases and viruses that seriously impede the body.
