Point Foundation Development Team Advances

Scholarship-granting Organization Increases Capacity for Donor Cultivation

LOS ANGELES & NEW YORK, June 5, 2012 ‐ Point Foundation (Point), the nation’s largest scholarship-granting organization for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) students of merit, welcomes two new fundraising professionals to its Development Department: David Garza as Development Director – East, and Arthur J. McDermott as Corporate & Foundation Development Officer.  Additionally, Alan Uphold has been promoted to Development Director – West.  Garza is based in Point’s New York office, while McDermott and Uphold work from Point’s Los Angeles office.

Detailed biographies of Garza, McDermott and Uphold are available from the Point Foundation staff web page.

“Just as Point invests in the education of our scholars so that they can go on to be leaders in their fields of study, it is essential for our continued success to advance our staff of highly experienced and passionate fundraising professionals” said Jorge Valencia, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Point Foundation.  “Alan, David and Art are working closely with Point’s Board of Regents and Board of Trustees on developing creative funding initiatives and events in support of our scholarships and programs benefiting LGBT youth.”

Testament to the success of Point’s donor cultivation efforts are announcements in April of major new funding: a commitment from Wells Fargo & Company of id="mce_marker".5 million to fund 10 Wells Fargo Point Scholarships and related programming, and id="mce_marker"00,000 from NBCUniversal for a new four-year, NBCUniversal Point Scholarship.

In early June Point announced a challenge match for gifts of cash or appreciated securities initiated by a longtime, generous donor. This summer will also see the launch of Point’s new giving circle, the Valedictorian Society to complement Point’s well established Cornerstone Society.  In September Point will invite supporters to experience a new and exciting Los Angeles fundraising event, “Voices On Point.”

During the 2011 – 2012 academic year there were 70 Point scholars studying at colleges and universities around the U.S., and there are over 124 Point Alumni. Point received more than 1,900 applications for its 2012 class of scholars, the recipients of which will be announced in mid-June.
