Markus Thiel


Point Trustee Markus ThielMarkus is an assistant professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Florida International University (FIU), Miami and a research associate at FIU’s European Union (EU) Center of Excellence. He graduated with a Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of Miami, and has published various books and articles on the political sociology of Europe and the EU, including ‘The Limits of Transnationalism’ (Palgrave, 2011), and co-edited volumes on: ‘Diversity and the European Union’ (Palgrave, 2009) and ‘Identity Politics in the Age of Globalization’ (Lynne Rienner, 2010). His current research revolves around the cooperation of transnational human rights advocacy groups in the EU, and he is preparing forthcoming edited volume on international LGBTIQ Politics.

He is involved in the International Studies Association’s LGBT caucus and also in FIU’s LGBTIQ initiatives. Lastly, he is married to Peter Garcia, his partner of 14 years.

Point offers mentorship, leadership development and community service training to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) students.
