Point's mission, what Point accomplishes, and Point’s scholarship funding information

Point Foundation was established in 2001 to nurture the next generation of LGBTQ leaders. Point Foundation empowers promising LGBTQ students to achieve their full academic and leadership potential – despite the obstacles often put before them – to make a significant impact on society.

By identifying and supporting these scholars, Point hopes to provide a greater level of acceptance and respect within future generations for all persons, regardless of sexual orientation, gender expression, or gender identity. We honor our scholars - their leadership, their acumen, their early involvement in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer causes, and their pledge to make the world a fairer and better place for all.

Point Scholarships are awarded on a "last provider" basis. Point fills in the gaps and provides funds not provided by other scholarships, grants, loans, work/study programs, etc. It is the responsibility of those selected as Point Scholars to secure as much outside funding as possible. Point is not intended to be, and cannot be, the sole source of support because there is no guarantee that the financial support will be the same each year, nor will it be provided each year. The scholarship amounts funded by Point each year depends on other financial support that Point Scholars receive from individuals, other foundations or grants, as well as the financial health of Point.

2015 Scholarship Application Part I:  Closed

2015 Scholarship Application Part II:

Email notifications will be sent to scholarship applicants who qualify to access Part II of the scholarship application. A final invitation to complete Part II will be sent by close of business on January 26, 2015.  Each scholarship applicant who submits Part II will automatically receive a confirmation email.

If you receive an invitation to fill out Part II, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU COLLECT YOUR SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AT THAT TIME. If you are selected as a semifinalist you may have as little as one week to mail the supplemental information before the deadline. We highly recommend NOT waiting until the last few days to submit Part II of your application; those who submit earlier will be notified earlier if they are a semifinalist and will therefore have more time to collect materials.

Semifinalist notifications will be ongoing and will be completed by the end of February 2015. Applicants should check spam/junk email regularly so they don’t miss this important email notification regarding their status as a potential semifinalist.

Each scholarship applicant who is selected to be a semifinalist will be notified by Point with an email by the end of February.

Point must receive your supplemental materials NO LATER THAN March 2, 2015. Submissions submitted earlier are most appreciated. Late and/or incomplete submissions will not be accepted. All of your supplemental material needs to have your full name and email address displayed legibly on each page.

Point is NOT able to provide confirmation of any sort that supplemental materials have arrived at the office.

Additional instructions regarding Semifinalist procedures can be found on the semifinalist tab once you begin your scholarship application.

Phone Interviews

In mid-March, Point will contact semifinalists with whom we would like to schedule a phone interview. Semifinalists who do not receive a phone interview will not be advancing to the final round. However, official email notification of status will not be provided until after all phone interviews are completed as Point reserves the right to schedule additional phone interviews are we deem necessary.

Please DO NOT contact Point to inquire about the status of your application. All applicants will be contacted as soon as we are able.

By the end of March, Point notifies each finalist by email and/or phone and extends an invitation to attend an in-person interview in Los Angeles before a committee. This interview is mandatory if the finalist chooses to remain in contention for the scholarship award. No exceptions will be made.

Interviews are coordinated by Point and will take place in Los Angeles between Thursday, April 30 and Saturday, May 2, 2015. The costs for transportation, lodging and meals are covered by Point for all finalists traveling within the U.S. Point will not pay for international travel. All finalists must also attend the Point Finalist Recognition Dinner on Thursday, April 30. Interview times will be set at a later date.

Applicants who have been invited to fill out Part II of the application may do so by clicking the link below. New sections will appear on your application dashboard automatically. To ensure that you are always directed to the correct login page, please bookmark this Point Foundation webpage and NOT the CommunityForce application page.

We will accept Part II applications until February 2, 2015 at 11:59pm Pacific. When you are finished, please print out a copy for your own records.
